The Detox Dilemma05.20.08

Detox diets make a whole lot of promises, from flushing out
poisons, melting away excess fat,

and bolstering the immune system to clearing the complexion, supplying energy, and even curing diseases. The basic idea is to “detoxify” the body of harmful substance so it can perform optimally, while at the same time magically causing your body to shed unwanted pounds.

Although the length and details of detox diets vary, most often they involve some version of a fast (usually water or juice) coupled with a period of severe calorie restriction and food limitation. Many programs also encourage colonic irrigation and herbal supplements to further assist the “purification” process.

For example, adherents of the popular Master Cleanse diet drink only lemon juice mixed with cayenne pepper, maple syrup, and water, as well as salt water and laxative tea for 10 days. Followers of this and other detox diets say that as their fat burns away, it takes harmful toxins along with it.

So where do all these harmful substances come from? Well, toxins, or substances that damage the structure or function of body cells and tissues, are everywhere. They’re in the foods we eat, the liquids we drink, and the air we breathe. Some come from external sources, such as alcohol, tobacco, drugs, pesticides, heavy metals, processed food, preservatives, additives, and airborne allergens, while others are created internally (free radicals and metabolic waste). There are dozens of books and hundreds of web sites that promote regimens to get rid of all these nasty toxins, and spas and health clubs alike invite dieters to detoxify themselves for good health and physical well-being.

The Benefits of Colon Cleansing05.17.08

This is very important question ? The benefits of colon cleansing ? it is very easy answer. it is yes. The accumulation of old faeces in the colon can stretch it and related body structures out of shape until it becomes three or four times as wide and twice as long as it should be, with only a small channel through which material may pass.

This can create hernias, collapsed colon, spastic colon, prolapsed colon, redundant colon, diverticulitis and haemorrhoids. In the majority of cases, colon cleansing alone will be sufficient to end any disturbing symptoms due to mechanical abnormalities (Robert Gray).

The accumulation of mucoid material along the walls of the small intestines can further interfere with nutrient absorption even though nutritional intake may be adequate. The nutrients that suffer the most are the large molecules, namely the proteins, vitamins and enzymes.

Stagnation is the failure of matter in the alimentary canal to continue moving until expelled through the anus. When material becomes lodged in the alimentary tract, it can continue to putrefy and release toxins for weeks. Stagnation occurs primarily in the colon and is usually the body’s largest contributor to putrefaction and the consequent autointoxication. The primary objective of colon cleansing is to remove stagnant material from the colon and entire alimentary tract. Doing so will sizeably reduce putrefaction and autointoxication within the system. The stagnant material in the alimentary tract can be divided into two types – putrefactive and postputrefactive. Putrefactive matter is still moist, decaying, and releasing toxic substances. Unless removed it eventually becomes so dry and hard that it does not putrefy any further. This postputrefactive matter is very difficult to dissolve or remove, except with special herbs and fibres. Worms, amoebas and other parasites live in and thrive upon this stagnant putrefactive matter.

Transit time is how long it takes after food is eaten until its residues are expelled through the anus. The shorter the transit time, the less the food will putrefy before being expelled from the body, and the less will be the resultant autointoxication. Colon cleansing reduces transit time.

Colon Cleansing, Caviar Facials Among Hot Beauty Treatments05.12.08

Beautification is big business these days. Anti-aging, detoxifying and cleansing being some of the top buzz words in an industry that is booming with new trends and treatments.

NBC 30’s Lauren Petty takes a look at the latest techniques out there that take beauty to the extreme. Demi Moore recently announced on David Letterman that she uses leeches as part of her beauty regimen.

“Just a week ago I was in Austria doing a cleanse and part of the treatment of leech therapy,” she said on the show. “You watch it swell up and get fatter and fatter and then when it’s super drunk on your blood, it sort of rolls over like it’s stumbling out of the bar.”

Moore said leeches detoxify her blood, beautifying from the inside out.So what do blood experts say about Moore’s unusual regimen?

Dr. Biree Andemariam, a UConn hematologist, said, “I was quite surprised. I was flabbergasted that she would go that far to undergo such what sounds like such a primitive treatment.”

Leeches were long used for blood-letting in medicine, but not anymore.

Andemariam said Moore may be stunning, but Andemariam doesn’t see the beauty perk from the painful process.

“There’s no scientific evidence that the utilization of leeches will improve one’s health or one’s look,” he said.At the Spa At Norwich Inn, they offer another unusual treatment, in the form of a caviar facial.

Betty Loiacono, the spa director, said, “It sounds like luxury and it’s really very funny because it is basic nature taking place right in our treatment room.”

But we’re not talking fish eggs on your face — it’s caviar extract.”It’s very highly nourishing, it’s very replenishing,” Loiacono said. “It goes into the skin and body receives it really well so it begins to fight the signs of aging.”

The body’s own detox system05.07.08

We tend to forget that the body is equipped with a detoxification system of its own, which includes the following: it is similar to colon cleansing program.

The skin. The main function of the body’s largest organ is to provide a barrier against harmful substances, from bacteria and viruses to heavy metals and chemical toxins. The skin is a one-way defense system; toxins are not eliminated in perspiration.

The respiratory system. Fine hairs inside the nose trap dirt and other large particles that may be inhaled. Smaller particles that make it to the lungs are expelled from the airways in mucus.

The immune system. This exquisitely orchestrated network of cells and molecules is designed to recognize foreign substances and eliminate them from the body. Components of the immune system are at work in blood plasma, in lymph and even in the small spaces between cells.

The intestines. Peyer’s patches — lymph nodes in the small intestine — screen out parasites and other foreign substances before nutrients are absorbed into the blood from the colon.

The liver. Acting as the body’s principal filter, the liver produces a family of proteins called metallothioneins, which are also found in the kidneys. Metallothioneins not only metabolize dietary nutrients like copper and zinc but also neutralize harmful metals like lead, cadmium and mercury to prepare for their elimination from the body. Liver cells also produce groups of enzymes that regulate the metabolism of drugs and are an important part of the body’s defense against harmful chemicals and other toxins.

The kidneys. The fact that urine tests are used to screen for drugs and toxins is a testament to the kidneys’ remarkable efficiency in filtering out waste substances and removing them from the body. Harvard Health Letters

Well, waste material, especially that which has remained in the colon for some time, poses several problems. First this material is quite toxic. These poisons can re-enter and circulate in the blood stream making us feel ill, tired or weak. Second, impacted materials impair the colon's ability to assimilate minerals and bacteria- produced vitamins. And finally, a build-up of material on the colon wall can inhibit muscular action causing sluggish bowel movements, constipation, and the result of these disorders.
