Hidden causes of weight gain11.17.09

According to modern lifestyles, many of us eat more calories than we need and do little physical activity. So if you need to lose weight, eat fewer calories, and try to burn more energy. In the meantime, try to recognise causes for your weight gain in some of the following.
Cheap flights:
Though regular holidays are good for your stress levels, but you should be more careful over what you eat, because you tend to eat out a lot more, which could account for the weight gain. Do not forget that alcohol contains calories, too. Also try to incorporate some activity into your holiday.

Food - labeled ‘low-fat’:
Low-fat foods may contain high levels of sweeteners or sugar. High sugar foods can also contain lots of calories that contribute to weight gain. Read the labels carefully and look at the overall energy and calories. Some foods may have a reduced amount of fat, but it may contain the same amount of calories.

Stress:
Most people reach for a sugary pick-me-up when stressed, such as snack on fruit and veg, and other low-calorie options, ie. plain popcorn, crackers, rice cakes etc. So, try to cope with stress by exercising. It helps promote mental wellbeing, through the release of endorphins which help to fight against stress.

Television:
Most people while sitting in front of the TV, snack on energy-dense foods such as crisps and chocolate. So spend less time in front of the TV or else do an activity while watching the TV, such as using an exercise bike.

You should be doing at least 60 minutes of physical activity on at least five days of the week in order to lose weight.

Your medicine cabinet:
Some common drugs can cause weight gain, ie. steroids (taken for many conditions including arthritis, eczema and asthma), antidepressants such as amytriptiline, anti-epilepsy drugs and antipsychotic drugs. If you’re concerned about weight gain, talk with your doctor of the above medication.Colon cleanser

Another cause for weight gain can be lack of sleep. According to Dr Neil Stanley, sleep expert at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, it can increases levels of the hormone ghrelin, which makes you feel hungry

Portion size:

Eat healthy meals cooked at home, instead of eating out or buying supermarket ready meals, you can control portion size and save money.

Lastly, think, it’s not rude not to finish that double helping of chocolate cake at a dinner party try to say “no thank you,” and stick with it, or it may be quite OK to leave food on your plate.

Think about What is colonic irrigation?10.14.09

Colonic irrigation also known as colonic hydrotherapy is a safe procedure that is used to remove the waste and toxins accumulated in your bowels. Toxins such as impacted faeces (dried-up stools), dead tissue, and parasites and worms. Colonic irrigation is a complementary therapy that is proven to be effective and can help with following health problems:
• bloating,
• flatulence (wind),
• diarrhoea,
• irritable bowel syndrome (IBS),
• fatigue,
• allergies,
• indigestion,
• constipation,
• multiple sclerosis (MS), and
• back pain.

Colonic irrigation procedure:

Though you need not make any special preparations prior to having colonic irrigation, it is not advisable to eat a large meal or drink a lot before the procedure. Your therapist will ask you some questions about your lifestyle and medical history.

During the procedure, You will need to lie on your side, while warm water is passed into your bowel through a tube that is inserted into your rectum (back passage). This water circulates through your colon in order to make your bowel empty itself of the waste products and pass them out of your body through the tube.
After about 10 minutes, you will lie on your back while the therapist gently massages your abdomen to help the process along. The whole procedure will usually take about 40-45 minutes.

After the procedure, you will be given some probiotics that contain bacteria, in order to help you keep your digestive system healthy. These may either be inserted into your rectum, or taken as tablets.

Diabetes Diet Basics03.23.09

A diabetes diet is recommended to people who were diagnosed with diabetes. Usually it is aimed at increasing the cells’ ability to respond to insulin which turns the blood glucose into energy. A diabetes diet should be supervised by a doctor or a dietitian as regular blood tests should be made to ensure the treatment works. It can vary from case to case depending on the patient’s weight, figure, overall health, sex and the condition type. Sometimes, pre-diabetes diet is prescribed to avoid the condition in the future.

A diabetes diet should always be combined with the increased activity. Regular exercise also stabilizes the insulin response and also helps in the weight loss. A healthy lifestyle is also essential as it is highly recommended to avoid alcohol and smoking when undergoing the program. Maintaining a strictly regular regime is no less important. You should eat, take your medicines and do your exercise at the same time every day.

The diabetes diet helps in working up a habit of healthy eating and sticking to the regime. It does not mean that you are required to avoid all your favorite foods at all. Modern scientific developments make it easy to maintain a healthy diabetes diet and enjoy your life at the same time. According to diabetes diet sheets even taboo foods are allowed if you stick to the recommendation. Diabetic exchange diet lists will help you to design the daily menu allowing for much flexibility and diversity. When thinking over your diabetes diet, you can exchange foods within one group choosing from the wide range of products.

Foods you’d better avoid when on the diabetes diet include salt, alcohol and sugar. However this rule cannot be implied to all cases. For example, sugar can be of different types. For example, glucose found in sweets should be avoided while fructose found in fruit is even encouraged in the diabetes diet

Obesity in children04.29.08

What causes it?

Obesity is caused by two simple factors - an unhealthy diet (typically too rich in sugar and fats) and not doing enough exercise to burn off the calories consumed. Occasionally, there are other factors, for example in a rare genetic condition called Prader-Willi syndrome there may be problems with controlling hunger. Hypothyroidism and Cushing’s syndrome can also cause obesity.

What are its effects?

These include problems with the joints and bones (such as slipped femoral epiphysis and bow legs), a condition called benign intracranial hypertension that produces headaches and affects vision, hypoventilation (leading to drowsiness during the day, snoring and even heart failure), gall bladder disease, polycystic ovary syndrome, high blood pressure, high levels of blood fats and diabetes.

There are also marked psychological effects leading to low self-esteem.

Who’s affected?

More and more children in the UK are becoming obese - it’s been described as a modern epidemic. Around 27 per cent of children are now overweight and research suggests the main problem is a continual reduction in the amount of exercise children take. Many overweight children have overweight parents - it’s often a matter of family lifestyles.

Well, waste material, especially that which has remained in the colon for some time, poses several problems. First this material is quite toxic. These poisons can re-enter and circulate in the blood stream making us feel ill, tired or weak. Second, impacted materials impair the colon's ability to assimilate minerals and bacteria- produced vitamins. And finally, a build-up of material on the colon wall can inhibit muscular action causing sluggish bowel movements, constipation, and the result of these disorders.
